Floating Raft Culture is one of the simplest and most economical hydroponic systems in the world today! Our Raft systems require far less capital at start up than other systems on the market. In a Floating Raft Culture system, young seedlings are transplanted into a polystyrene board, which floats on top of a tank or pond filled with nutrient water. As the plants grow, the roots dangle down into nutrient solution where they find everything they need to grow healthy and vigorous. The tank can be anywhere from 1’ – 3’ deep, and can easily function as pure hydroponics or an Certified organic system. Floating Raft Culture is a closed hydroponics system, so nutrients and water are continually recycled, preserving our natural resources and the environment. Lettuce and herb seedlings are started in Rockwool or Oasis cubes. Seedlings are grown for 2 to 3 weeks and then placed in 2” plastic net pots or planted directly into predrilled holes in polystyrene boards.

After boards are planted, they are floated on the nutrient water at one end of the tank, then harvested from the opposite end. The water in the tank also serves as a fluid conveyer so very little mechanization is needed to move the crop.

Plants are removed from the polystyrene and then roots are trimmed back to the cube or completely saved, depending on how they are packaged. Boards are rinsed and then replanted with a new crop.

Hydroponic or hydro-organic lettuce and herbs are packaged creatively as premium living produce. The plants are very clean, nutritious, and generally pesticide free. Lettuce and herbs can be packaged in specially designed plastic clam shells or plastic bags with a rubber band at the base of the plant, which seals moisture in the root area.
